Burr Oak's most famous resident was Emmett Till. The 14-year-old teenager was murdered in Mississippi at age 14 in 1965, leading to a significant moment in the American Civil Rights Movement.
In 2009, the Burr Oak Cemetery scandal made the news. The Cook County Sheriff, Tom Dart, alleged that workers at Burr Oak Cemetery allegedly dug up over 100 graves. They then dumped the bodies into unmarked graves and resold the plots to new customers. If you like Coca-Cola, it is home to one of the two Chicago areas Coca-Cola bottling plants located in Alsip.

CAR AND TRUCK ACCIDENTS IN ALSIP:
The intersection of 127th St. and Cicero Ave has remained on the Illinois Department of Transportation's list of Top 10 Dangerous Intersections in Illinois. This roadway is congested by car and trucks due to the location of the on and off ramps to the Tri-State Toll way. When roads become congested, many car accidents and truck accidents can occur.
In November 2015, two persons avoided a potentially deadly collision between a passenger car and a CSX train accident. The passengers had escaped from the car seconds before it got struck by a train. The driver was at a closed rail crossing in Alsip, police said. The passenger car driver was ticketed for failing to obey a traffic signal and crossing a barrier device. It was noted by police that the gates and warning signals were functioning properly.
Due to its proximity to the Tri-State Tollway (see map below or view a larger map in a new window), many semi-truck accidents and passenger vehicle accidents occur in Alsip. In July 2013, a man was injured when his passenger car was struck by a flatbed semi-trailer.
