There are over 22,000 residents in Darien as of the US Census in 2000. About 90% of the population is White, approximately 10% are Native American, and less and 2% are of another race.  The first settlers of Darien came from the New England regions. Many of traveled by ship through the 5 Great Lakes by using the Erie Canal.

DARIEN PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS:

In November 2015, a 39-year-old man was fatally struck by a car and killed.   The Darien pedestrian accident occurred at 87th Street in Darien.   It was reported that the victim was helping to stop traffic while a truck pulling a trailer of horses backed out of a driveway and crushed him. No charges were filed against the truck driver.
